Upcoming Educational Events

Over the upcoming weeks, there are quite a few events taking place across Long Island to encourage and show solidarity for public education. I have included information below that highlights these educational events and forums. The flyer lists a schedule of various Community Forums. Please feel free to share this information with friends and family or post it on social media such as twitter, Facebook, etc. to encourage a strong show of solidarity.

Thanks in advance for becoming involved and doing what you can to support important educational events.

Coming up:

3/7 Elmont
The forum speakers are experts in their field. The forum will be a place to better understand the effects of testing and what they are doing to our children and public education. There will be a question and answer period.

3/9 East Williston - Screening of film "Beyond Measure"

The EWTA's screening of the film Beyond Measure followed by a discussion on is on Wednesday, March 9th from 4-7pm at the Wheatley School. 11 Bacon Road, Old Westbury, NY 11568

"In Beyond Measure, we find a revolution brewing in public schools across the country. From rural Kentucky to New York City, schools that are breaking away from an outmoded, test-driven education are shaping a new vision for our classrooms. These are schools that see critical thinking, communication, exploration, experimentation, collaboration, and creativity as the key to good education. And they are dramatically improving outcomes for children of all backgrounds. They are schools where practically every student graduates and goes on to finish college."

The screening is open to all locals and their members. Feel free to forward to others.

3/12 Roosevelt Field Mall
On Saturday, March 12, teachers, parents, family members and friends are requested to come to the Roosevelt Field Mall between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and noon wearing homemade white T-shirts that simply say OPT-OUT to “shop” for support for the opt out movement.

The event is called OPT-OUT/SHOP-OUT and the hope is that holding it at one of the busiest and most visible venues in Nassau County will generate increased “buzz” about opting out.

Because Roosevelt Field is private property, this is technically not a demonstration or a protest or a rally, but simply a group of people out for a morning of shopping who all just happen to be wearing the same T-shirt. There will be no signs, organized marching or leafleting.
