BOE's Negotiations Update for the Community on Herricks' Website

Dear Colleagues,

We recently began negotiations on the Teachers' and Teaching Assistants' Contracts with the BOE and met only once. At that meeting we exchanged proposals. Our second meeting was cancelled due to the snowstorm on Tuesday.

We entered this process with expectations that negotiations were going to be very difficult during these trying times, but forged ahead as professionals wanting to work toward attempting to reach a fair successor agreement with the BOE.

On Friday afternoon, Jan. 24th, the BOE sent out a listserve memo to the community providing a "Negotiations Update for the Community." The BOE has posted information on the Herricks' website under the BOE tab regarding the HTA and HAAS negotiations. They have also stated that "periodic updates will follow as meetings continue." A copy of the expiring contracts, letters by the BOE, opening statements by the BOE President at the first negotiating meetings and "A Plain Language Summary of District's Proposals" made to each bargaining unit at the time are posted on the website.

The HTA was not made aware of this action beforehand. Although it is within the Board's right to put these documents on the District website, this has never been done and is not common practice. In the past, negotiations between the BOE and negotiating parties were not made public. It has been practice that bargaining in good faith occurs when negotiations are not discussed publicly as it can impede progress. This change of tactic on the Board's part is indicative of the style of negotiations they are choosing to take.

Know that the PNC, you elected, will continue to work in a dignified and professional manner throughout the process. I urge you to refrain from publically commenting or discussing the proposals that the BOE has put forth. Discussions and comments regarding specific proposals can only be interpreted or perceived as though we are divided. It is evident that causing divisiveness among our members would benefit their goal. It is vital that during the weeks and months ahead we remain united and work together to strengthen the bond that exists between our members. I have full confidence in our PNC team and know that you will continue to provide us the support that is needed so we can work to do what is best for our members.

In unity,

Nidya Degliomini
President
Herricks Teachers' Association
