Meetings & Events for Nov.18 -24, 2013 and Common Core Forum

Senator Martin sponsored Commissioner King's Forum last Wednesday, Nov. 13th at Mineola H.S.. This event was open to constituents in Senator Martin's district. HTA members from each school, as well as, administrators, board members, PTA members, parents and community members attended this event. The meeting lasted about three hours. The program was divided into four segments. The topics discussed were:

Questions had to be pre-submitted and were asked by representatives of the variety of invited communities. Senator Martins kept the meeting running smoothly, asked follow-up questions and helped restate and clarify points that were being made or asked. Commissioner King did not change many of his positions. Towards the end of the forum, Chancellor Tisch noted that blame should be placed on the federal government rather than the SED. Commissioner King noted that "InBloom" provides a secure place for private student information.

 

It was empowering to see so many people stand up and ask pertinent questions, yet very frustrating to hear Commissioner King and Chancellor Tisch continue to turn a deaf ear to the concerns and opinions of so many parents, community members, teachers and administrators. The entire forum is expected to be available on Youtube in the near future. It is imperative that we continue to voice our dissatisfaction and opinions so as to instill the needed change.
