Common Core Updates and Info

Dear Colleagues,

I wanted to share two links to keep you updated and informed. The first link, "Student Speaks Out on C.C."  shows a student's sentiments on C.C., testing and changes in education:

The second link has excerpts of Commissioner King's Forum in Mineola on Nov. 13, 2013:

In addition, many of you have asked for clarification on opting out of testing for your own children. I am including the information a NYSUT colleague sent out to members.

Making the decision to opt your own child out of the NYS ELA/Math tests is a difficult one. There is a lot of information out there with regard to high stakes testing, the consequences for our children and their schools.  Much of the information is inaccurate and many school districts are providing parents with incorrect information.  I encourage you to get the facts so you can make an educated decision as to whether or not your own child should sit for the NYS ELA/Math tests.

Here is a resource to help you make your decision:

Additionally, there will be an informational meeting held locally onDecember 4th at 7pm at the Bryant Library in Roslyn. A parent in a neighboring community helped to organize the event.  ( I have attached a flyer for the meeting to this email)  If you can't attend the meeting on December 4th, another one is scheduled for January 15th also at the Bryant Library. Speakers and time TBD.

The fight we are fighting as teachers can be won if we also fight as parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles.

Hope you find this helpful and informative.
