NYSUT Early Career Member Conference Sat., Feb 3rd

You're Invited to:

An Early Career Members' Conference

Registration is now open for the rescheduled Nassau Regional Office’s Early Career Member Conference to be held on Saturday, February 3rd at the Huntington Hilton in Melville.
This conference is specifically designed for early career members. It will help members understand that the importance and value of union membership is vital as we approach life in a post-agency fee world. The conference will focus on subjects that should be of great interest to members who are in the beginning stages of their careers. The program is designed to: (1) provide early career members the opportunity to discuss their needs and interests with peers; (2) demonstrate to early career members the benefits of union membership; and (3) provide early career members with information to enhance their professional, financial and personal well-being.
Participants will have the opportunity to pick and choose from a menu of 45-minute mini-workshops covering a wide range of subjects. A list of the mini-workshops offered includes:
  • Moderated discussion groups focusing on the needs of early career members (These will be interspersed throughout the day.)
  • The Career-Threatening Perils of Misusing Social Media
  • Tenure – What It Does … and What It Doesn’t Do
  • How NYSUT’s Member Benefits Program Can Save Members Lots of Money*
  • Navigating the Increasingly Complex Certification Maze*
  • NYSUT’s Education & Learning Trust – A Valuable Professional Resource for Early Career Educators*
  • What Rights and Benefits Do You Acquire from Union Membership?
  • There’s Lots You Need to Know NOW About the Teachers’ Retirement System*
  • What You Need to Know About APPR and Teacher Evaluation*

Workshops followed by an asterisk (*) will be presented by staff from NYSUT headquarters departments.
Participants who are randomly chosen to participate in focus group discussions will be able to attend as many as four other workshops. Those that do not participate in a focus group discussion can attend as many as six mini-workshops, if they choose.
When participants are not in a workshop or a discussion group they will be free to visit with exhibitors representing various NYSUT departments and services as well as outside companies that provide services of value to members.
The conference begins at 8:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast, includes a full hot lunch, and will conclude at approximately 3:45 p.m. Following the conference, participants are invited to a cocktail reception at the hotel.
Sheila Lavin, our HTA administrative assistant, will handle registering all attendees. Interested members should contact Sheila, by Wed, Jan. 24th, via email: office@herricksta.org
